Reach Mobile is a new cell phone carrier.
They offer full feature phone services with support for visual voicemail, WiFi calling, VoLTE, and the personal hotspot feature.
They actively try to reduce your phone bill with their “Best Fit” policy.
Dnd they double as a crowdfunding platform to donate 10% of their data plans to providing cellular connectivity to people in need. Reach Mobile also has reasonably affordable plans, starting at just $20/month for unlimited talk, text, and 1GB of LTE data.
Given Reach Mobile's strong vision and values, along with their great service, here is how you can sign up, get activated on their network, and give them a try. I’ll even cover how you can keep your current phone number when you sign up for Reach Mobile.
Step 1: Make Sure You Have an Unlocked Phone
Before signing up for Reach Mobile, you need to make sure your phone is unlocked and compatible with their network.
What does an “unlocked phone” mean?
A “locked” phone is a device that is restricted to work only on a certain network. If you purchase a phone directly from AT&T with a two-year agreement, or if you choose to lease your phone from AT&T, often times the phone is “locked” to the AT&T network. AT&T will block the phone from connecting to the Verizon, T-Mobile, or Sprint networks, even if the phone has the proper LTE antenna bands built-in.
An “unlocked” phone is a device that can connect to any carrier or network. If your phone is unlocked, you could take it to any carrier you choose (such as Mint Mobile, Tello, RedPocket, or Reach Mobile) and it would work fine. It is important to verify your phone is unlocked before trying to activate it on another carrier.
How do I tell if my phone is unlocked?
Often times your phone will be locked if you…
- Purchased it on a two-year agreement with your plan
- Leased the phone from your carrier and it is not yet paid off
- Purchased the phone with a special promotion
Your phone will often be unlocked if you…
- Purchased it at full price directly from the manufacturer (Apple, Samsung, Google, etc.)
- Have finished paying off your lease and now own the phone outright
The best way to confirm your phone is unlocked is to contact your current carrier to find out. If it is locked, you can submit a request to have it unlocked so you may use it with any cell phone plan or carrier your choose. This can often save you a lot of money if you switch to a more affordable plan!
Step 2: Order a Reach Mobile SIM Card
Once you have verified your phone is unlocked, head on over to Reach Mobile’s website.
Select Your Plan
Select the plan and the number of lines you want. Reach currently supports having up to four lines on one account. When you’ve made your selection, click “Select Plan & Proceed.”
Create Your Account
On the next page you’ll be prompted to create your Reach Mobile account. Enter your first name, last name, email address, and password. You can also choose to sign in with your Google Account.
Confirm Your Plan & Number of Lines
Here you can confirm you selected the plan you wanted, and you also have the option to add lines to your account. If your plan is correct, click “Next.”
Confirm Your Device is Compatible with Reach Mobile
The next screen will prompt you to enter your device IMEI. IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity, and as it sounds it is basically just a number used to identify your device’s manufacturer, model, and specifications. Entering your IMEI allows Reach Mobile to know which device you are trying to activate and confirm it is compatible with their network. Reach Mobile uses the Verizon and AT&T networks to provide coverage, so this step confirms your phone will work on one of those networks.
To find your phone’s IMEI, you can dial *#06#, or you can find it within your phone’s settings:
- iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About, and scroll down until you see IMEI
- Android: Go to Settings > About Phone, and towards the top you should see your IMEI number (I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S10 to find this, so the steps may vary slightly depending on which phone you have)
Choose to Get a New Number or Keep Your Current Phone Number
Once Reach Mobile’s system confirms your phone is compatible with their network, you’ll be prompted to choose to either get a new phone number or keep your existing one.
If you’re like me and you’re going to be keeping your current phone number, keep the selection on “Use Current Number.” Simply enter your phone number that you wish to port and select who your current carrier is from the dropdown.
Enter Your Billing Address
In the next step, enter your billing name, address, and shipping speed for your SIM card. The two options for shipping are Standard (3-6 days) for $3, and Express (1-3 days) for $10.
Get Your Referral Discount
Make sure to enter your friends discount or promo code to get a discount on your first month of service! You can also use code “stetsdogg” to get $20 of account credit when you sign up. (This helps support the growth and development of this website, and I appreciate it!)
Confirm Your Order
Proceed to payment, enter your preferred payment method, and place your order! Your SIM card should arrive between 2-6 days depending on which shipping method you selected.
You’re all set! Make sure to save your account login information as you’ll need this to sign into your account on Reach Mobile’s mobile application where you’ll be completing the activation process.
Step 3: Activate Your New Plan
When your SIM card arrives, you’re ready to activate your new plan on Reach Mobile! Inside your welcome kit, you’ll find a card holder for the back of your phone, a Reach Mobile sticker, the activation kit itself, and a handwritten note from someone at Reach welcoming you to their network. Here are the steps to follow to get activated.
Download the Reach Mobile App
The rest of the activation process takes place using the Reach Mobile application on your phone. If you haven’t already, download the Reach Mobile application. Here are some quick download links:
- Download Reach Mobile app on Apple App Store (for iPhone)
- Download Reach Mobile app on Google Play Store (for Android)
Log in to Your Reach Mobile Account
Once you have the app installed, log in to your Reach Mobile account to begin the activation process. You should see a button toward the bottom of the screen with your SIM card order number and a button to begin the activation process. Tap “Activate Your Service,” and then “Yes, Let’s Go” to get started.
Get All The Information You Need
The next screen will prompt you to make sure you have everything you need for your activation to go smoothly. Here’s the checklist:
- Your activation kit and SIM card
- Your phone
- About 15 minutes and a comfy spot with WiFi
- The information for your Number Port
If you are porting your current phone number to Reach Mobile, you’ll need the following information from your current carrier:
- Your current carrier account number
- Your current account PIN
- Your billing ZIP code
I suggest double-checking your billing ZIP code to be sure it is correct. It may seem strange, but I’ve heard of carriers changing the billing ZIP code by 1 digit to make the port-out process more challenging. They want to keep you as a customer, after all. But you’re ready to move on to Reach Mobile! I suggest giving your carrier a call to confirm all your account information. If you don’t know what your account PIN is, a great thing to do is to try and change it. Making sure this information is correct is important for your number porting process to go smoothly.
When you’re ready, tap, “Activate your line.”
Scan Your SIM Card
Enter your SIM card number by allowing Reach Mobile to access your camera and scanning the barcode on the back of the card.
Enter Your Account Information
Remember all the information you got from your previous carrier? Well, now is the time to enter it! Enter the phone number you wish to port, select your current carrier, and enter your billing zip code, account number, and PIN.
Activate Your Line!
After you’ve entered everything, you’ll have a chance to review the information before proceeding. Verify everything is correct, and then tap “Activate”!
You’re Now Activated on Reach Mobile!
Reach Mobile will send the porting request to your current carrier to begin the number transfer process. This can take anywhere from a few minutes (my porting process took all of 45 seconds) to 48 hours. Be patient, and if you need Reach Mobile’s customer success team can be contacted directly within the application.
When your phone number has successfully been ported over to Reach Mobile, you’ll receive a notification that it’s time to insert the SIM card into your phone. It’ll take a few minutes for the SIM card to connect to the network, but soon you should be activated and up and running on Reach Mobile. And that’s it! Enjoy your new plan and feeling good about contributing to helping people in need get cellular data access. 😃
